How to get there

The following information and links will help you while planing to reach to Abano and Padua. Please, also refer to the maps in The city section of our site.

Note that during the International Symposium Open Source 2005 there will be a free shuttle connection from the Padua railway station (check maps in The city section) to the Conference venue in Abano in the morning and back in the evening.

How to reach Abano Terme

Abano is served by Venice "Marco Polo" airport from where then you can easily reach Padua and Abano Terme. We suggest you to use the "Marco Polo" airport of Venice, since it is closer and there are more flights from / to Europe (also several direct flights from / to the USA).

· From Venice "Marco Polo" airport

"Marco Polo" airport of Venice is the third in importance in Italy and linked with all major European airports. If you cannot fly directly to Venice, look for a flight through some other convenient European airport. From the airport you can reach Padua and then Abano by train, by bus, by car, or using a door to door service.

  • Bus
    Please check the "How to reach Padua" page of our site to learn how to reach Padua from the Marco Polo airport of Venice. Then from Padua you will need to take a bus to Abano Terme (see the next section of this page).
  • Car
    The public transportation in Italy is efficent, rather well organized and cheap. But if you plan to rent a car (very expensive), reserve it in advance, since april is a quite active turistic season in Italy. When you exit from the airport, turn to the right and follow the green "Autostrade" (highways) signals, then enter the highway to Milano (A4). Follow the "Milano" direction and exit the highway at "Padova Ovest" signal. Then follow indications to Abano Terme
    You have to pay before exiting the highway and you also can use your credit card.
    Note that you may find a traffic jam in the "Tangenziale di Mestre", before entering the highway, particularly, between 5:30 and 7:30pm.

· From Padua to Abano Terme by bus
Abano is connected to the center of Padua by a public bus service.

How to reach Padua

By airplane

  • Bus
    From the airport you can take a regular bus going to the Padua bus station (check the Padua map in The city section). The connection is managed by SITA (blue buses). The tickets can be purchased in the Arrivals Hall, they can also be bought on board (then they cost some more). The trip usually lasts one hour. This is the complete timetable.

  • Train
    To reach Padua by train, first you need to take a bus (yellow buses of ACTV company) from the airport to Mestre (check the maps in The city section) railway station. All the trains going from the railway station of Mestre to Verona, Milano, Bologna, Roma stop in the Padua. Tickets can be bought in the Mestre station and must be stamped (obliterated) using any of the yellow machines that are in the station. You will get a fee, if the ticket is not obliterated before getting on the train. For EuroStar (ES) trains a supplement is to be paid before boarding. There is a supplement for InterCity (IC) trains as well.

  • Car

By train

If you plan to come to Padua by train, please browse the Italian Railways (Ferrovie Italiane) webpage for timetables and more detailed information.
From Milan, the typical ride time is 2 - 3 and from Rome 4 - 6 hours, depending on the category of the selected train, and about an hour from Bologna.
First and second classes are available; for EuroStar (ES) and InterCity (IC) trains a supplement is required, and in some cases a seat reservation is mandatory: hence, specify which train you are going to board when asking for a ticket.
All tickets (both round-trip and one way) have a validity of 2 months. Before boarding the train, you have to validate them by stamping them in the yellow machines located on the platforms and throughout the station.

By car

Padua is linked by highways with Venice (A4), Milan (A4) and Bologna (A13) and we suggest you to use the highways, because it is a safer and faster way to reach the city.
Follow the green "Autostrade" (highways) signs. If you arrive from Venice, Milan or Brennero you have to leave the highway at the exit called "Padova Ovest", and if coming from Bologna or Rome, at "Padova Sud". Then follow the "Centro" indications to the city center.
If you are going to come by car, make sure that your hotel has a parking lot, as parking in the center of Padua is difficult.
